A Galway senator has warned this week that the fishing crisis which is besetting the west of Ireland will do the mackerel industry irreparable damage if the Goverment does not take action soon.

The European Commission is urging lobster fishermen along the west coast of Ireland whose livelihoods are under threat because of a drop in prices to set up a producers’ organisation in order to strengthen their position in the market.

The chairmen of the Western and North Western Regional Fisheries Boards have made a joint plea to Minister Eamon Ryan and Minister of State Sean Power to retain the two fisheries regions and their head offices in Galway and Ballina, when the fisheries boards are abolished and a new Inland Fisheries Authority is created later this year. Under Government proposals, the two regions are to be amalgamated.

As wine makes a really acceptable present I suggest you make an early Christmas present list and note anyone who would like a bottle or two or indeed a full case!
